âBrohn?â
With a groan, Brohn lifts his head. He looks across at me, then turns his attention to his blood-stained chest.
âYouâre okay!â I squeal.
Brohn looks up at me again and forces a frail smile. âIâm alive. I think. But I wouldnât call what Iâm feeling âokay.ââ
âBut...you got, you knowâ¦shot.â
âOh. That would explain the blood. And the pain.â
âIt hurts?â
Brohn moans, âUh-huh. A lot, now that you mention it.â
At the moment, Iâm too immersed in a combination of laughing and crying to sympathize. âForget that,â I yelp. âYouâre alive!â
Brohn wriggles his fingers and then lifts his hands, turning them back and forth in front of his face like heâs inspecting them. âIâm alive. Not sure how.â He slips a hand under his shirt and skims his fingers across his chest. âGreat,â he says. âIâm dented.â
âWhat?â
Brohn pulls up his shirt to reveal a cluster of shallow, red-rimmed pits in his muscular abs and pecs. âIâm dented. Iâve got dents in my chest. I feel like a golf ball.â He withdraws his hand and inspects his fingertips. âBlood. But I donât think there are any actual wounds.â
âHow is thatâ?â
âI think they healed. How long have I been out?â Brohn takes a good look around: at me, at the empty white room, at the transparent globe weâre floating in. âHow long have we been inâ¦this thing?â
âItâs some kind of grav-cell. They call it âthe Marble.â And we havenât been in here long enough for you to heal from a dozen bullet wounds to the chest.â
âDid youâ¦were you conscious this whole time?â
âNo,â I admit. âBut it doesnât feel like it could be more than a couple of hours or so since Ekker cornered us in that alley. The blood on your shirt doesnât even look like itâs all the way dry yet.â
âThen we have a mystery on our hands.â
âMore than one.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âEkker was in here.â
âThe Patriot general who shot me?â
âThatâs the one.â
Frowning, Brohn rubs a hand across his chest. âRemind me to have a chat with him about that sometime.â
âHeâs going to take us somewhere. Do something to us. Iâm not sure what. But it doesnât sound like itâs for our own good.â
Brohn looks around. âWeâre floating.â
âItâs some kind of gravitational cocoon.â
Brohn kicks his legs back and forth a little. âNeat,â he says, his amused grin dropping quickly into an irritated frown. âBut kind of awful at the same time.â
Something occurs to me, and I share the memory with Brohn. âRender sent me a thought the other day,â I say. âSomething about being âsuspended in helplessness.ââ
Brohn looks around at our floating bubble of a prison. âIâd say this counts.â
âHe also said something about ârediscovering death.ââ
âHm. Not the most cheerful prophecy. Any guesses about what it means?â
âNo. And Iâm not exactly looking forward to figuring it out.â
âWhat about Krug?â
âEkker says Krug doesnât matter. Heâs turning on him. Says heâs taking us away before Krug even gets here.â
âGreat. So instead of being Krugâs slaves, weâre going to be this guy Ekkerâs?â
âThat sounds like his plan.â
âThen we need to get out of here.
